English Language Learners
Three teachers at Nokomis Montessori South specialize in English language instruction; they strive to promote strong foundations for academic achievement and English Language proficiency for all student's learning English as another language (English Learners or ELs).
We utilize an inclusion model, in which our English language teachers work with individuals or groups of students within the classroom during literacy time on reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition, English language teachers meet and collaborate frequently with classroom teachers to ensure that ELL instruction is always tied to grade level content.
To evaluate progress, English Learners participate in the ACCESS standardized assessment each winter. Learners can score on a continuum of 1 (beginning to learn English) to 6 (native-like language proficiency).
The Nokomis ELL team is also noted for supporting several of our family events, collaborating with school-based teams with the goal of welcoming all families to be part of their child(ren)'s education.
